PERFORMANCE OF REX SPECS EAR PRO
We have adopted the best practices used by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to conduct real ear testing on dogs to determine the effectiveness of Rex Specs Ear Pro. These tests were run at lower frequencies as they are the hardest to attenuate.
Real ear testing was conducted in a sound booth with the noise exposure set to 95 dB A (white noise). 95dB A examples: tractor, blender, motorcycle, power tools, Bell UH-1 helicopter
See graph below for results. At very low frequencies (20Hz – 120Hz) Rex Specs Ear Pro attenuates, or reduces the noise exposure between 18 dB A and 24 dB A. As the frequency increases, so does the effectiveness of the product.

Why do dogs need hearing protection?
If you’ve ever been to a dog kennel or animal shelter, you know it’s often a deafening cacophony of barking. For the dogs living there, it can literally cause Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). Dog hearing protection can help avoid that.
Especially for working dogs such as military, police, search and rescue, and service animals, a dog’s hearing is essential for both the dog and the handler’s safety. Working dogs need to be able to take in their surroundings and hear commands, but when dogs suffer from NIHL they can’t do this as well putting everyone in danger. Similar to humans, dogs can get NIHL from any form of prolonged loud noise like truck or helicopter transportation, gunfire, or even a loud nearby construction site.
HOW DOES DOG HEARING PROTECTION WORK?
The hearing protection device for the dog works similarly to hearing protection devices for humans. The ear pro covers the ears, and is more or less impervious to whatever sounds are outside of the hearing protection. The technical, stretchy fabric and acoustic foam that the device is made of helps keep the ear pro tight to the dog’s head forming a good seal around the ear. In audiology we use the term attenuated, or dumbed down, even eliminated to describe what happens to sound when it tries to pass through sound blocking materials. The goal of the hearing protection is to attenuate as much noise as possible – reducing stereocilia fatigue, reducing noise induced hearing loss.

His fear of high pitch noises developed through adolescence- avoidance soon turned into extreme shaking & hyperventilating.
Started with a blender but then issues grew to include -strimmer, hand whisk, and lawnmower, and growing!
I didn’t just want to stop/block the noise I wanted to help him gain his confidence back as he was at the point where just the visual of the machine would set him shaking/hyperventilating.
Personally, I found that the ear defenders didn’t block noise- he could quite clearly hear direction but what they did do was dampen down the decibels.
It has taken a lot of time, patience, and routine but he is now at a stage where he is able to lay outside whilst the lawnmower is in use wearing the ear defenders, and he can lay outside with the stimmer in use WITHOUT them on.
The hand whisk he still needs to wear them but is again happy to lay in the kitchen whilst I’m baking as he did before adolescence struck!
As for the blender- it is working progress the decibel of this machine is the greatest, but he is going in the right direction….. Rome wasn’t built in a day as they say.
